Cancellation and refund policy

Last updated 27 September 2026.

The short version

  • The 7-day trial costs nothing. During the founding beta it needs no card, and if you do nothing it simply ends.
  • We email you before every payment, so a charge never comes as a surprise.
  • If you cancel within 14 days of your first payment, we refund that payment in full. Cancelling in Billing is enough; you don't need to ask separately.
  • After 14 days, you can still cancel at any time from Billing. A monthly plan runs to the end of the month you have paid for, with no refund.
  • After 14 days, an annual plan can be refunded pro rata for the part of the year you won't use. Email us to ask.

Your free trial

Choosing the Chef plan starts a 7-day free trial. During the founding beta you do not need to give us a card to start it. If you add a payment method before the trial ends, we email you before it ends to say when your first payment will be taken and how much it will be, and your subscription then continues. If you do not add one, the trial ends on its own, you keep your Taste account, and nothing is charged. Cancelling during the trial therefore never involves a refund, because nothing has been paid. There is one trial per account.

Your 14-day right to cancel

As a UK consumer, you have the right to cancel your paid subscription within 14 days without giving any reason (Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013). Your paid subscription begins when your first payment is taken at the end of your trial, and the 14 days run from that payment.

Because MSC-Lumina starts working for you straight away, our checkout asks you to tick a separate box, which is never ticked for you, asking us to start the service within your 14-day cancellation period. Ticking it does not take your right to cancel away. The law would allow us to charge you for the part of the service you had already used before cancelling. We don't: if you cancel within 14 days of your first payment, we refund that payment in full. We keep a record of when you ticked the box and the exact wording you saw.

How to cancel

Sign in and go to Billing, then choose "Manage subscription". That opens Stripe's billing portal, where you can cancel your subscription yourself. You can also cancel by emailing admin@msclumina.com quoting your account email address, by replying to one of our payment reminder emails, or by sending us any other clear statement that you wish to cancel. You do not need to use a specific form.

What cancelling does depends on timing

Within 14 days of your first payment: your cancellation is treated as using your 14-day right. We refund that payment in full, automatically, and your Chef plan ends straight away. Your account moves back to the free Taste plan.

After 14 days: your cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you have already paid for. You keep access until then and you are not charged again.

When you'll get your money back

If you cancel within the 14-day window, we reimburse the payment within 14 days of the day you tell us, and usually straight away, using the same payment method you paid with, at no extra fee to you. Refunds are issued through Stripe, our payment provider; your bank may take a few more working days to show the money back on your statement.

Monthly plans, after 14 days. Cancelling stops future payments but does not refund the month you are already in. You keep full access until it ends.

Annual plans, after 14 days. Cancelling stops the plan from renewing, and you can ask us for a pro-rata refund of the unused part of the year you have paid for, worked out by the day from when you tell us. Email admin@msclumina.com to ask for it; cancelling in the billing portal alone ends the plan at the end of the year and does not trigger this refund. Once refunded, your access ends on the day you asked.

Nothing here limits your statutory rights: if the Service was not provided with reasonable care and skill, or not as described, you may be entitled to a repeat performance or a price reduction under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, whenever that happens.

What happens to a founding place if you cancel

A founding place is taken when your first payment is captured, and is not returned if you later cancel after the 14-day window. It is returned in two cases only: your founding trial ends without a payment ever being taken, or your first payment is refunded inside the 14-day window described above. Your founding price, separately, follows you as a person and survives cancellation, unless your first payment was refunded, in which case the founding price goes with the place. See our Terms of Service, clause 4.

Outside the UK

Paid plans are open to UK accounts only for now. US subscriptions aren't available yet, and the free Taste plan carries on as it is. We will publish the terms that apply in the US before paid plans open there.

Something urgent while you're cooking?

This policy is about cancelling and refunds, not real-time help. If something is wrong with an allergen flag or a temperature while you are actively cooking, see our Support page. A support inbox with a 3 working days response commitment is not a substitute for your own judgement in the moment.
